Katie Cassidy's Laurel Lance has finally had the first official picture of her as the Black Canary. At first glance, it's very over the top. they have chosen subtle differences to make her and Sara stick apart, they have chosen not to black out her eyes, and also given her a black lipstick to further disguise her. It will be interesting to see what finally pushes her forward to being a fully costumed Canary. I am also interested to see the new dynamic Laurel brings as canary, so far in the series she has been the damsel in distress. that is all about to change. which version of Canary do you like better?
While princesses and fairytales are as much our favorite things as raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, another passion here at Second Star Entertainment is comic books, and super heroes. Right now the super hero tv show is reigning supreme, and the number one show that brought it all back is Arrow on the CW. the show comes back from it's winter hiatus and i can not wait to see what the back half of the season brings, but one thing is for sure, we will finally see Laurel Lance as the Black Canary. Sara was also just such a bad ass, it had nothing to do with revenge, but she became a strong assassin for survival, she fought to stay alive. She also had weaknesses but she was never weak. i know eventually Laurel had to take on the canary mantel, but i would have liked Sara to stay on a little while longer.

As you know Cinderella comes out in March, and we here at Second Star are incredibly excited! take a look at these amazing costume sketches for the film. This art work is so inspiring and i love the way she translated her designs to the final product we see in the movie! while I love Cinderella, and Lady Tremain, i think my favorite of the two sketches has got to be the Stepsiters. the dresses are so perfect, and so garish, and yet so stylish.
i am sure most of you are aware, but Frozen is a run away hit. The characters have appeared in books, dolls, clothing, an oscar for best song. They were adapted for a successful stint on Once Upon a Time, and now we get another extension of their story and another sure to be hit song with "Frozen Fever" the 8 min animated short to appear before Cinderella this March. Along with all of this, we will also get a glimpse into more of their wardrobes. Anna will premiere a new spring dress that features sun flowers on the skirt, and a small vest. But most exciting is the new dress that Elsa will premiere, it's a short sleeved jade green version of her ice dress, with a bodice and cape adorned with small pink flowers, that if you look closely are actually snow flakes, which implies that she may have created the dress using her ice powers. the concept art and merchandise looks amazing, but i can not wait to see it in the actual short! i wonder what the song will sound like, hopefully it will be up beat like for the first time in forever and feature Jonathan Groff as much as it does Kristin and Idina! Are you excited for Frozen Fever and a second dose of Anna, Elsa, and Kristof?
Mirror Mirror was a fresh and original live action adaptation of the Snow White Story that was released in 2012. it starred Lily Collins, and Julia Roberts as Snow White, and her Wicked Queen. Personally i loved it, it was fun, whimsical, and full of magic. it had gorgeous settings and locations, and academy award winning costumes. It was believable, when i watch the film i am totally transported to this world they created. Lilly Collins' reminds me of what it would have been like to see Audrey Hepburn play Snow White. She is the perfect blend of modern heroine, and traditional princess. Not to mention her costumes are stunning, each new dress more enchanting then the last, i love them all, i can not choose a favorite. i love that they worked very hard to stay far away from the red, blue, and yellow that is so often associated with this specific princess. The details and the work that went into each dress is honestly amazing, all the embroidery and the pleating, it's just stunning. we simply can't do a post about mirror mirror and not showcase Julia Robert's portrayal of the queen, in some of the most incredible gowns i have ever seen. While her queen was definitely wicked, she is not portrayed as being down right evil and nasty. She gives our prince a love potion, is mean to the heroine, and banishes her and makes her an outlaw, but she does it in a way that while sinister is more comical, all with a style and flair only Julia could give it. Now the costumes, these dresses are just incredible. i would have to say my two favorites are the red and white peacock dress, and the green gown. but all of them are stunning. I love that she doesn't look like a traditional evil queen, there is no black curve hugging gowns, or sinister capes, no dark lips and arched eyes. This is the kind of outside the box design i adore.
Starting in 2015 J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury Press will re-release one Harry Potter novel a year. what is special about these re-releases is they will include approximately 110 colored illustrations by artist Jim Kay. How freaking cool is that, new artist is going to tackle and bring all 7 books to life. His artwork will pull inspiration from the film series starring Daniel Radcliff, and also from his own imagination based on how he sees what the books describe. i can not tell you how excited i am for this, he has released the first 7 teaser images of what we can expect in the books and the art work is just stunning. In interviews he speaks with such passion about the project that it makes me want them all now, but they will def be worth the wait. what do you guys think? Are you excited for the books, will you buy them?
Well Valentines Day is a month away, and we have a ton of Valentines we want to send out. One of Second Star's goals has always been to make people smile and feel good about themselves, and we can't think of a better way to do that then to take time out of our day to send each one of our fans, supporters, and friends a Valentine from our family to yours. It seems like now a days, everything in the mail is either junk, or bills, and we would like to change that, my hope is that every once in a while we can send you a card, or a little note that will brighten your day and make you smile. every year i would like to spread this joy and love, and make more people smile, and realize that there are people out there who take the time to let you know we think about you, and we are thankful for your kindness and support. If you would like to receive a Valentine from us, you can send us a private message on facebook, or you can email us at [email protected]
Tonight was the Golden Globes, and award show that honors the best and brightest of the television and film industry. And with the start of awards season comes my favorite season, red carpet season. While i don't want to focus on the negatives, and the things i don't like ( I'll leave that to Kathy Griffith on Fashion Police!) i do wanna showcase some of the dresses, and one pant suit, that i just adored. I loved that alot of the red carpet was filled with classic tributes to old hollywood glamour, and simple silhouettes. No one went for overly sexy, except for Jennifer Lopez and i wouldn't have her any other way. Now one of the standouts for me for the evening, and this is odd, was Emma Stone. I just loved her pant suit, it was glamorous, effortless, and so her. other stand outs for me were Viola Davis (loved the color) and Julianne Moore (loved everything) both woman looked stunning, wore beautiful dresses that complimented their coloring and made them look radient, and had just the right amount of bling. I added a few more of the dresses that i loved, but did weren't in my top favorites.
in honor of the newest version of Cinderella coming out in March, starring Lily James, i wanted to pay tribute to some of my favorite Cinderellas of the past. These are in no particular order because i love them all for different reasons.
1. Lauren Osnes in the broadway production of Cinderella. I just love her, she is adorable and a true talent, her Cinderella, is sweet and innocent, and so full of love and kindness, and her voice is a dream. the scenic design and costume design for the show are also breathtaking. 2. Disney's Cinderella, this movie is such a treasure, there is something so dreamy and wonderful about this movie. i remember just being in awe when her dress transformed. 3. Drew Barrymore in Ever After. this movie was beautiful, cleverly written, a modern fairytale that mixed the real world with the idea of a fantasy. Drew Barrymore was perfect as Danielle, and it is still one of my favorite movies because of her honest and genuine portrayal. 4. Julie Andrews in Rogers and Hammerstien's Cinderella. She originated the role, and its amazing to see her so young and fresh, and how incredible she was even then. 5. Brandy in Roger's and Hamerstien's Cinderella. I remember how exciting and magical it was to sit in front of my tv, and watch it for the first time, Whitney and Brandy were and incredible pair, and the movie was breath taking from start to finish. i used to watch it over and over. 6. Last but not least, Anna Kendrick in Into the Woods. Anna can do no wrong, and her subtle humor and dead pan deliver was utter perfection. She is one of my favorite parts of the entire film, and her portrayal of the multi layered princess who realizes she doesn't want or need the handsome prince was spot on. She also collaborated with Colleen Atwood on the design of her gold gown to create a timeless cinderella for all ages. Congratulations to Colleen Atwood for her 2015 Golden Globe for Costume Design for Into the Woods. i personally loved the film, and her costumes. She wanted to create a sort of timeless fairytale world, and i think she did. There are modern elements, and she also incorporated elements from the 30s, 40s, and 60s. i also love that she made the costumes her own, she had her own unique vision. So often with into the woods, people get stuck with the designs and concepts created for the original broadway production, but i do think that this film thrived off of having it's own identity. Some stand outs for me were Cinderella's gold ball gown, The Witch after transformation, and the Wicked Step mother, and Ugly Step Sisters. What i love most about Atwood is her use of different textures and patterns, and the little details she puts into everything. the other thing i love about Atwood is she collaborator, she was very open about her collaboration with Meryl (who actually studied costume design in college) and Depp (who is notorious for coming up with interesting characters, and often sketches his vision of the character he is portraying) She has such an understanding of the relationship between actor and costume, and it shows in her designs. Here are some side by sides of her design sketches next to the finished costumes as they appeared in the film.
My favorite part of a birthday part is not the decorations, or the games, or the invitations... it's the cake. Last year was the first time in many years i didn't make the cake myself, but went to a bakery and spent the money to have a cake made. I went to six places before i found what i felt was the perfect cake. I had cake for a week after my party and i couldn't have been happier. My cake wasn't as over the top as these, but it was still perfect for my day. In the last 10 years cakes have taken quite an interesting turn, over the top designer cakes has become a fixture for many parties. Cake decorating is such an incredible art form, here are a few of my favorite cakes on the internet right now. some of them are simpler than others, and some are just crazy amazing. like the mad skills of some of these artists blows my mind. Would you have a designer cake at one of your celebrations? what kind of cake would you want to have?
